EU High Rep. For Foreign Affairs Josep Borrell Asks For A EU Military Force To Achieve “Strategic Autonomy”

High Representative of the European Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Josep Borrell, has called this Sunday for the creation of an EU military force to achieve “strategic autonomy” and to stop being “subsidiaries of the Americans”.

This is what he said in an interview for the Spanish media site El Confidencial in relation to the difficulties they are having in the evacuation work in Afghanistan, where Spain still has “more than 200 Afghan personnel waiting to enter the airport”, where they have to pass the controls of the Taliban and then the Americans “who are very restrictive”.

“I understand that they have to control for security reasons, but it is making access very complicated,” explains Borrell, who has already spoken on the subject with Antony Blinken, Secretary of State of the United States (U.S.). To speed up these tasks much more, Borrell sees the need to bet on the so-called “strategic autonomy” of the European Union.

“We would now like to have the capacity to act on our own, to have a military force capable of mobilizing itself as the Americans mobilize theirs,” said Borrell, who referred specifically to “a ‘first entry force’, a force to act in emergencies”. “Not only for training missions, but also for more complicated things, as in this scenario [Kabul],” he points out.

Moreover, the head of European diplomacy asks for a clear understanding of the message sent by the American Administration: “What Biden has said is that the US no longer wants to wage other people’s wars and the EU has acted as a ‘Kantian’ power, using the instruments of peace, the rule of law, trade”.

“This new scenario certainly raises issues of leadership at the global level and I think it is an occasion to reinforce the concept and active policy of European strategic autonomy,” concludes the head of EU diplomacy.
