MOSCOW, January 16 – RIA Novosti. Two people died in Peru due to tsunami waves on the Pacific coast of the country after the eruption of an underwater volcano off the islands of Tonga, according to the national police.
The Hunga Ha’apai volcano erupted in the South Pacific island nation of Tonga, triggering a tsunami wave. In particular, meteorologists in Japan announced the threat of a tsunami up to three meters high.
At least 230,000 Japanese were ordered to evacuate, and at least 10 ships were capsized or sunk. Evacuations also took place in the Pacific islands, for example, in American Samoa, more than a hundred families were evacuated from villages on the island of Sawaii due to large waves. States on the West Coast of the United States also warned of the possibility of a tsunami.
“We regret the death of two people who were found dead by the San Martin police on Nijlamp Beach when the waves were anomalous. In addition, we inform you that this beach was declared unsuitable for swimming,” the Peruvian police said in a statement.
Two women drowned in the Lambaeque region, according to RPP radio.
