An earthquake of magnitude 7.3 occurred in northeastern Japan, in the region of Fukushima Prefecture, said the Main Meteorological Office of the country.
This happened at 23:36 local time (17:36 Moscow time). The tremors were felt in the northern and northeastern prefectures as well as in the capital Tokyo.
A tsunami threat has been declared. The hearth lay at a depth of 60 kilometers.
